Last Minute

October 28, 2026

I went on a weekend trip last month. In preparation, I did something I never do… I waited until the last minute to pack. There was zero outfit planning, I just grabbed a few of my favorite things and called it a day. This might not sound like such a big deal, but for a planner/overthinker like me, it felt absolutely insane.

What shocked me more than last minute packing, was how much it worked! I think this was the best dressed that I’ve ever been on a trip. Nothing I packed was aspirational, everything was comfortable and it all went together so well, I didn’t have to put a lot of thought into my outfits. It was such a success, that I’m trying to apply those same principles to my every day wear. At home you have the option of your entire wardrobe, not just a small suitcase with a few pieces. In my experience, this often leads to choice paralysis, then panic, then rewearing the same three t-shirts over and over. Ugh. But now I’m trying something new: just throw things on and see what sticks.

In the theme of just throwing things on, I went with what was most comfortable, like my favorite Levi’s shorts and this cozy Aerie sweater. The riding boots are just for fun. They also remind me that it is indeed fall, despite the presence of the shorts.

Everything about this outfit oozes ease. Cozy, comfy, simple. The sweater is an easy peel off layer for when the afternoon gets hot, and the boots can easily be swapped for sneakers, loafers, or ballet flats depending on my mood.

This outfit took maybe 5 minutes to put together, and once it was on I let it be. No overthinking, no re-working. I have to admit, it felt wrong at first, but I love the end result. It seems like taking the planning out of the equation is where the magic happens!
