A Cottagecore Summer

When the outside temperatures are boiling but you still want to look cute, what’s easier than a light cotton dress? It’s a throw on and go kind of vibe and I can’t get enough. This summer, I’ve been loving the ruffles, puff sleeves, and airy fabrics of the cottagecore aesthetic. Am I about to run errands or run through a field of wild flowers? Who knows? Add in my favorite summer hat and it looks like I’m in for a cottagecore summer.

This dress from Mod Ref is one of my favorite cottagecore inspired pieces. It’s comfortable, it’s breezy, and it makes me want to romanticize every aspect of the summer season.

For this look, I’ve kept things simple. I paired the dress with my favorite pair of black Birkenstocks for a little classic twist on the cottagecore look.

I love the contrast here between the bright white of the dress and the black shoe. Earlier in the year, I styled this dress with a riding boot to create the same level of juxtaposition. If you’re curious on how that turned out, you can read about it here.

I was motivated to keep the contrasting vibes alive, but with a summer sandal instead. Yes, this is a pretty basic outfit. A dress and sandal is far from revolutionary. But we’re not attempting to reinvent the wheel here. The cottagecore aesthetic is all about slowing down and enjoying simplicity. It’s the end of the summer season, and I’m going back to the basics.
