How Many Plants Make a Garden?

How many plants make a garden? Because you’re looking at the proud new owner of not one, but two live plants. As someone who normally gravitates to the eternal simplicity of the fake plant, this is a big deal. It’s not that I’ve had anything against live plants, it’s more that I haven’t had the motivation to keep them alive. RIP to the mini orchid and the succulent that populate my plant graveyard.

I was browsing Pinterest, feeling inspired by aesthetic home decor when i thought, “you know what? Maybe a plant would be nice.”

It is summer after all, and is there a better time to try something new than summer? The weather is warm, the days are long, and the possibilities feel endless. Anything can happen. Even someone as live-plant-averse as me can develop a green thumb in the summer.

I don’t know how many plants make a garden, but I’m guessing it’s at least two. And who knows? I’ve only got two right now, but maybe this will inspire an extravagant multi-plant eco-system! Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Nevertheless, I’m thrilled to be embarking on this new hobby.

When it came time to choose an indoor plant, I started where I start everything in my life–with copious amounts of research. If this hobby is going to stick and these plants are going to survive, I needed to make sure I was going into this as prepared as possible.

My key concerns were ease of care (I’m a beginner after all), indirect sunlight, and infrequent watering. I’m trying to be realistic, so simple care instructions are essential.

All of my research led me to the Pothos plant. Also known as the Devil’s Ivy, this baby can thrive basically anywhere. Low light? No problem. Little water? Totally fine. This obviously seemed like the perfect start for a plant novice, so I tracked one down and the rest is history! My bedroom gets a good amount of indirect light and I have a reminder on my phone to give it a little water weekly. So far, it feels like we’re set up for success.

Although I was set on a Pothos plant, a little Philodendron caught my eye when I was leaving the grocery store. Since I have my Pothos I figured, I’m a gardener now so what’s one more? Thankfully this is another beginner friendly plant that takes similar care to the Pothos. I’ve set them up on the dresser in my bedroom where they can get plenty of indirect light, and I can stare at their beauty whenever I walk into the room. A win win.

A little care and a lot of prayer is going into these plants so hopefully they will continue to thrive. If not…better luck next time.

Are you a plant guardian? If so, please feel free to leave any tips in the comments!

Xx, M
