Meg Ryan Coded
Can you tell I’ve been watching a lot of 90s rom-coms lately? Specifically anything and everything starring Meg Ryan. I think one of the main reasons I love romance movies from this decade, is that they feel just a tad more realistic. Don’t get me wrong, the storylines are mostly absurd (like in any good rom-com), but the wardrobe somehow feels more relatable. Denim is a prominent feature, along with cozy knits, blazers, layers and comfortable shoes. Of course there are moments where she dresses up. Girls nights, dates, office parties and the like. But the wardrobe on the whole feels refreshingly normal. Anyway, I rewatched a few of my favorites this weekend. The outfits must have seeped into my subconscious because I woke up this morning inspired to draft up an outfit that is decidedly Meg Ryan coded.

A good outfit always starts with a solid pair of denim. This beloved pair from Boyish Denim has the perfect vintage blue that makes me think it has been reincarnated straight from the 90s. Not to mention the baggy silhouette. This pair has also officially reached peak comfort levels. It has a broken-in softness that takes many years and wash cycles to achieve, without having to wait many years or for multiple wash cycles. Magic! It’s to the point where I choose to wear them on a Saturday with no plans except to lounge on the couch. Instead of sweats! They’re that good.
Aside from the denim, any classic Meg Ryan film also features a blazer layered over something cozy. Think the classic layers from “When Harry Met Sally.” To stay on theme, I threw on this favorite blazer over a basic black sweater. The final product is not as bulky or shoulder-paddy as those of years past, but the overall effect is the same. Very casual, very comfortable, and simply classic.
