How to Style Flare Jeans

I love, love, love when something buried in my closet suddenly becomes trendy. This isn’t to say that you need to wait for something to be on trend to wear it. However, there’s something to be said about a trend’s ability to give new inspiration to an old favorite.

This recently happened to me with flare jeans. If you tuned into the Super Bowl last week, you were probably equally stunned by the Eagles’ dominant win over KC, and by Kendrick Lamar’s flare jeans. These pants have taken the internet by storm. You may love them, you may hate them, but you can’t deny their stylistic power. While many clothing items have been pointing to a resurgence of early 2000s trends, this pair of pants has seemingly confirmed that Y2K style is sticking around. Thankfully I already have a pair, and I think I’ve finally figured out how to style flare jeans.

Whenever I wear something a little out of the box, I like to keep everything else in the outfit as neutral and simple as possible. It helps keep the outfit far enough in my comfort zone that it makes it out of the house. It also works to highlight the jeans as the main star of the show.

The dark color palette moves these jeans into a neutral territory where they’re different enough to be interesting, but are styled in a subtle blink-and-you-miss-it kind of way.

I’ve worn these jeans before, but I’ve never felt like I’ve truly cracked the code on styling them. For now, leaning into all of their Y2K glory seems to be the way to go. I’ll check back in a couple of months to see if flare jeans are still sparking creativity. If not? At least they had their moment!
